The 360 degree views available at the Arthurs Creek Cemetery make it one of the most picturesque places in the North Eastern suburbs. A meandering roadway bounded by oak and gum trees just off Arthurs Creek Road leads you to this peaceful setting. With pastoral acreage surrounding the cemetery, you may even see a kangaroo or wombat - or perhaps a blue tongue lizard sunning themselves in warmer months.
Our cemetery is open to foot traffic 24 hours a day but for those who need a little assistance or have impaired mobility a phone call will ensure the gates are opened to allow car access. For more information about visiting, click here.
In 1844, Patrick Reid settled in Arthurs Creek with his wife Agnes Reid and their 9 children. The site on top of the hill was Agnes’ favorite spot where they would often enjoy family picnics, taking in the far ranging views extended from Mount Disappointment to the Dandenong Ranges. So fond was she of the place that Agnes requested to be buried there when she died. According to her wishes she was the first interment at the site on 19th May 1847. Her husband, Patrick, passed some years later aged 74 and in July 1858, and was the second burial at the site.
In 1865, government surveyors found the site to no longer be part of the Reid property and this started the process for 6 acres of land around the Reid graves to be declared a cemetery by the Governor in Council on 9 September 1867. Hence the Arthurs Creek Cemetery as it is known today was formed.
